The Counter-Extremism Strategy – Submission to Home Affairs Committee

Averroes submitted written evidence to the Common’s Home Affairs Select Committee’s Inquiry into Countering Extremism in Britain.

Averroes focused on the Prime Minister’s latest Countering Extremism Strategy, pointing out that the definition of ‘extremism’ remained vague and unworkable as any opposition to ‘fundamental British values’. Such values are said to include democracy, rule of law and tolerance of other faiths. However imposition of such values by ostracisation from public spaces of those perceived to be opposed to them poses serious risks to the the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the notion of open and frank debate on contentious matters of thought and conscience.
